New committee to tackle repeat offences

February’s full council meeting agreed to create a non-permanent study committee to analyse legislative reforms and other organisational measures to tackle repeat offending. The goal of the new committee will be to try to ensure that the corresponding legal procedures are completed in the legal established time frames. Most crimes committed by repeat offenders are petty crimes such as pickpocketing and theft.

The new committee will study legislative reforms to reduce repeat offences and ensure legal action is pursued against petty crime in the established legal terms. The committee is the result of the needs identified by the Local Security Board in its session of Monday, 19 February 2024, and part of the future Local Security Plan 2024- 2027.

The committee will be made up of two councillors from each municipal group and is expected to meet for five sessions in all. During the course of 2023, the police identified 526 people listed as repeat offenders, with a total of 6,169 cases of crimes against them, mainly for muggings and pickpocketing in the streets.
