Keys to 85 flats for the elderly handed over
The homes include specific service for the over-65s and form part of the Porta Trinitat municipal housing project, located in the Trinitat Vella neighbourhood in Sant Andreu. The homes have protected rents and are completely adapted and accessible, allowing residents to maintain their personal autonomy. The new residents in this development built by the Barcelona Municipal Institute of Housing and renovation (IMHAB) are over 65. Although they are autonomous, they either owned no home or the home they had was not accessible.
From now on they will be living in accessible one-bedroom flats with protected rents, designed for one or two people to live in. The homes are managed by the Municipal Institute for Social Services (IMSS) and have communal and multi-purpose spaces for community activities, a rooftop garden area for communal use, plus a communal laundry room and some allotments.
This is the 26th project by the City Council to create homes with services for the elderly in the last twenty years. The goal of these developments is to guarantee the independence of senior citizens and at the same time offer services to help them maintain their autonomy. The homes have phone lines providing the telecare service, baths to facilitate access and avoid falls, power sockets at comfortable heights, a concierge service, geriatric and cleaning professionals and an internal alarm service in case of any incidents.
This latest block brings the total number of homes with these characteristics in the city to 1,566, with work currently under way on another four blocks with a total of 342 homes. This will bring the total number of flats with services for the elderly to nearly 2,000.
In addition, the Porta Trinitat block also includes 54 flats with social rents, which will be handed over to tenants soon.
