Jaume Plensa to receive the Gold Medal for Cultural Merit

The Full Council has decided unanimously to award the highest distinction to the sculptor Jaume Plensa, for excellence and intensity in his creative activity.

Born in Barcelona in 1955, Jaume Plensa i Suñe stands out for his sculptural work and his installations in public spaces around the world, with a highly personal language that delves into the spiritual. In Barcelona there are eight of his works and sets of sculptures in public spaces and in some buildings. One of the most popular is the sculpture Carmela, located in front of the Palau de la Músic and loaned to the city in trust by the artist. The loan has just been renewed for another eight years. Three other works by Plensa can be seen in the city with the titles Escullera, Born and Dell’Arte, owned by the City Council.

Besides his sculptural work, Plensa has cultivated work in other disciplines such as engraving, drawing, sound and even stage design, collaborating for shows and operas by La Fura dels Baus.

International recognition

The artist has received national and international awards and recognition during the course of his career, such as the Medaille des Chevaliers des Arts et Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture in 1993, the Premi Nacional de Cultura d’Arts Plàstiques from the Government of Catalonia in 1997, the Premi Nacional de les Arts Plàstiques in 2012, the Creu de Sant Jordi 2012 and the City of Barcelona Award in 2014.

Plensa has honorary doctorates from the University of Chicago (2005), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (2018), and on 30 September this year, the University of Barcelona.
