The work will be carried out in two stages. The first entails work on the subsoil of the square and in the underground car park, including new public toilets, a new transformer station, the elimination of the stairwell in the middle of the square and the current car park exits, as well as foundation work for the new building. The relocation of the public toilets at the Convent dels Àngels should be ready in April 2026, ensuring uninterrupted use of this service, with the old toilets to remain in use until the new ones are operational.

Once the first stage is completed, the second stage sees work start on the building that will house the new rooms and spaces of the MACBA.

Whie this work is carried out, the area of work occupying the square will be delimited by a fence and the movement of lorries and machinery unified via a single access point in C/ Montalegre.

Even though pedestrian circulation will be guaranteed at all times, as well access for service vehicles and emergency services, people are advised to use alternative routes.

Progress on the new CAP Raval Nord

During the second half of January 2025, work should also get under way on a new stage of the project to install the CAP Raval Nord – Dr. Lluis Sayé in the former Capella de la Misericòrdia.

Work began in November with a first stage for foundation work and archaeology. As work progresses it is expected to occupy some public space around it.

The work entails occupying the pavement in C/ Montalegre and part of the Pati dels Tarongers, without affecting the emergency exit or the school toilets. Efforts have been made to minimise disruptions, for instance, the party wall shared with the Escola Vedruna will not be demolished after all.

Information campaign

A from this week, the District of Ciutat Vella has launched an information campaign with sessions to explain the disruptions for local people, shops and businesses and schools in the area, with representatives from the MACBA and the Catalan government’s Ministry of Health also taking part.
