Fines for shops and businesses for incorrect waste management
When shops and businesses fail to use the waste collection system that corresponds to them, they end up overloading waste containers for household waste. Fines of 300 euros will now be applied to commercial establishments which fail to properly manage the waste they generate, despite having been previously informed about it.Inspections were carried out in December at commercial establishments in the five districts where an information campaign had been conducted about commercial waste management. Out of the 732 businesses visited, 34.4% were not managing their waste correctly. A process has now begun to impose fines of 300 euros on these businesses.
Information campaign before fines started to apply
In March, teams of information staff carried out visits to explain to shops and businesses how to manage waste (times, days, where to leave waste) and inform them of the ban on leaving waste in public space. Some 40,000 visits were carried out during the first rollout stage for the Cuidem Barcelona cleaning service (Ciutat Vella, L’Eixample, Gràcia, Sant Andreu and Sant Martí).
A new information campaign is now in progress in the rest of the city’s districts, which make up the second rollout stage for the cleaning contract: Sants-Montjuïc, Les Corts, Sarrià – Sant Gervasi, Horta-Guinardó and Nou Barris.
Work to consolidate the correct management of commercial waste forms part of the joint responsibility campaign for the Cuidem Barcelona Plan.
