The Zurich Barcelona Marathon has been a resounding success, with new records, big crowds and a brand new historical route

The 45th edition of the Zurich Barcelona Marathon was a resounding success, with the participation of 20,000 runners and a new course record in the men's category.

The race followed a brand new, flatter, faster and more central circuit with just 33 turns – a change that contributed to the achievement of record times.

Abraham Tadesse led the from the early stages of the race, along with Kenyans Collins Kipkurui Kipkorir and Edmond Kipngetich. However, at the kilometre 35 mark Tadesse stepped up the pace, crossing the finish line all by himself.

Athlete Abraham Tadesse managed to beat the previous record by 5 seconds, finishing in a time of 2:05:01.

The silver in the men’s category went to Kenyan Collins Kipkurui Kipkorir, who reached the finish line with a time of 2 hours, 6 minutes and 44 seconds. Fellow countryman Edmond Kipngetich came in third place, with a time of 2 hours, 7 minutes and 21 seconds.

In the women’s category, the victory went to Ethiopian athlete Degitu Azimeraw, with a time of 2:19:52. Azimeraw was just 8 seconds behind the course record set last year by Zeineba Yimer Worku.

The women’s silver went to Shuko Genemo Wote, also from Ethiopia, who finished with a time of 2 hours, 21 minutes and 35 seconds. Her compatriot Meseret Dinke Meleka finished third, with a time of 2 hours, 22 minutes and 58 seconds.

Female participation in the 2024 Zurich Barcelona Marathon was high – 25% of participants were women. What’s more, 57% those who took part were international runners, from 107 different countries.

As well as the Marathon, the weekend was packed with athletics-related activities. The Runner’s Fair welcomed 100,000 visitors, and 1,500 people took part in the Breakfast Run.

The 2024 Zurich Barcelona Marathon has been a huge success for the city of Barcelona, which has once again demonstrated the ability to organise big sporting events.
