The Barcelona Institute of Municipal Markets has now responded to the input relating to the project and granted its definitive approval ahead of the tendering process for the work to build the provisional Mercat de l’Estrella in the Jardins del Baix Guinardó, some 500 metres from the current market at C/ Pi i Margall , 73.

With an initial investment of roughly seven million euros, the final project includes the installation of the provisional market structure in the area by the pond. The building will have an area of 1,750 square metres and four entrances with ramps to guarantee accessibility. The ground floor of the building will be used for the market and there will also be a mezzanine floor for the technical area.

The location will allow the market and the gardens both to operate normally, as the central esplanade will be clear and the sports and play areas will be maintained. At the same time, the structure will be located in an accessible spot and offer suitable access from the street, safeguarding the market’s current catchment area and avoiding the market encroaching on the catchment areas of other markets.

Provisional until the current building is renovated

The provisional market is expected to operate in the Jardins del Baix Guinardó for around three years.

The current building of the Mercat de l’Estrella in C/ Pi i Margall dates back to 1957 and has a series of structural shortcomings that do not pose an immediate risk but means that a complete revamp to the facility is required.

The definitive work on the building is expected to start in 2026, entailing the demolition of the current building and the construction of a new space with a ground floor, three upper floors and two basement floors.
