Approval to redevelop the layout of the Trambesòs

January’s full council gave a green light to the new layout, establishing that all Trambesòs lines on the Besòs side of Glòries will use Av. Diagonal after converging by C/ Ciutat de Granada. The new layout will help improve pedestrian and public transport routes, also providing better organisation for the circulation of different modes of transport at this point, where the tram system, pedestrians, buses, bike lanes and private vehicles must all converge.

This project corresponds to the second stage of work already under way since 2024 and now in the final part, with completion expected in June 2025. Altogether, the project will add a new green corridor connecting with Pl. Glòries, in the space now free of traffic thanks to the road tunnels.

The pedestrian connection between Glòries and Diagonal should be substantially improved with new pedestrian crossings in C/ Badajoz giving direct access to the central area of the square from Gran Via and from the central section of Av. Diagonal.

This new connection should mean double the volume of circulation of public transport here. On the one hand, the projects doubles up what is currently the only connection in Gran Via between Glòries and Rambla del Poblenou, which would be a bottleneck with the increased volume. On the other hand, as the tram routes in this project have been developed in line with the configuration of the recently inaugurated interchange in the square, allowing for more efficient traffic light sequences, the travelling time for the T4, T5 and T6 lines will be optimised.

The project also means changes in the urbanisation of Ciutat de Granada and Av. Diagonal itself. On the one hand, the route of the tram system in C/ Ciutat de Granada will completely change the tram section of the street between Gran Via and Av. Diagonal, with the implementation of double track and the elimination of private vehicles in this section, except for the underground car park. On the other hand, the central section for pedestrians in Av. Diagonal will continue, on either side of Ciutat de Granada.

The agreement approved today will determine the responsibilities of each administration in the second stage of urbanisation of the Gran Via, with the City Council to contribute 22.3 million euros, while the ATM will assume 9.24 million. These amounts come in addition to the budget for the first stage of the work, of 11.41 million euros.

The prevision is to be able to start the work in the fourth quarter of 2025 and for the project to take 17 months

New green corridor in Gran Via: renewal of 70,000 square metres

The work should turn the section of Gran Via between Glòries and Rambla del Poblenou into a new public space that facilitates the connection between the surrounding neighbourhoods and also backs sustainable mobility. It will generate a new green space characterised by a wide central pedestrian avenue with meeting spaces and play areas filling the area with life. The work in this whole area responds to a long-standing demand from local people and will mean the renovation of nearly 70,000 square metres of space.

This section of Gran Via, around 50 metres wide, will be a space where greenery takes centre stage. Some 400 trees will be planted here, creating a large space with shade and bushes to favour biodiversity and help delimit meeting spaces and play areas. On the side where there are residential blocks there will be a pavement 5.25 metres wide, extending to 7.35 metres where there is no service lane, plus a curbless lane for bicycles, vehicles belonging to local residents and service vehicles. On the other side, by the shopping centre, there will be a pavement 4 metres wide, a lane for local people and bicycles and space for the two tram lines and buses in both directions.

In the centre there will be a large pedestrian space 21 metres wide, with meeting spaces, benches and seats, play areas and other furniture.
