Control and input in April’s Commission for Social Rights
April’s Commission for Social Rights debated and voted on different proposals from municipal groups linked to the promotion of the book sector and reading, the definition of a new model for emergency accommodation services, turning the police headquarters in Via Laietana into a democratic memory space, improving healthcare at home for the over-65s and distinguishing between sexes in toilets in schools and public facilities.
Junts per Barcelona called for the Institute of Culture to check the procurement of books for the municipal library network and to prioritise the purchase of books in Catalan. The group also requested the creation of a plan to support bookshops in the city and promote the presence of the local book sector on an international scale at the Guadalajara International Book Fair 2025. Finally, Junts proposed the promotion of reading in schools and neighbourhoods and to urge the Spanish Parliament to study the application of 0% VAT on books.

Barcelona en Comú called for the constitution of a working group with different stakeholders to draft a new model for emergency accommodation and urge the Government of Catalonia to include these in the review of the range of Social Services in Catalonia.

Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, on one hand, asked for Barcelona City Council to adhere to the Crida Internacional manifesto to turn the police headquarters in Via Laietana into a democratic memory centre, and on the other, urged the state government to transfer the headquarters to another police site or premises belonging to the Ministry of the Interior.

The Partit Popular proposed a care project and awareness campaign for the over-65s, to facilitate healthcare and emergency assistance at home for the elderly. The group also called for collaboration with emergency medical services and other services to ensure the implementation of this project.

Finally, Vox proposed urging the Government of Catalonia to guarantee that toilets and changing rooms in all schools and public facilities distinguish between sexes.
