Commission constituted to study the issue of housing
The Commission to Study the Housing Problem has been set up to boost the public stock of protected housing, fight the housing emergency and gather and discuss proposals from organisations to achieve a housing agreement. The constitution of this commission was approved in October’s full council meeting, with the new body to meet for six scheduled public sessions.
The main goal is to analyse legislation, urban planning and the investment needed to bolster the public housing stock, fight the housing emergency and study the impact of regulating rents and seasonal rentals, urban planning innovation and urban regeneration.
The commission will be chaired by the Barcelona en Comú councillor Janet Sanz, with the First Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet as the vice-chair.
Six sessions to tackle housing challenges
The first session approved the rules, function and content of the sessions that will follow. The rest of the sessions will be organised as follows:
- The second session will examine the regulation of rents in the city and the effect of seasonal rents or room-only rents.
- The third session will discuss measures for contention and intervention in the free market to ensure the affordability of housing and combat property speculation.
- The fourth session will look at strategies for renovation and urban regeneration: sustainability, safety, healthy conditions and the dignified state of the housing stock.
- The fifth session will look at innovation in policies at a European level to guarantee the right to housing.
- Finally, the sixth session will present the report with the conclusions of the commission.
