Barcelona Zoo receives the Biosphere Sustainable Lifestyle certificate
Barcelona Zoo has obtained the Biosphere Sustainable Lifestyle certificate, an award which recognises the promotion of initiatives linked to conservation and respect for biodiversity, the application of sustainability criteria in the daily activity of the Zoo and backing for activities aimed at the public.Notable measures which have earned Barcelona Zoo this distinction include the launch of projects for the conservation and protection of fauna in its natural habitat, initiatives promoting public awareness about respecting biodiversity and aspects relating to good practice on animal welfare.
The Zoo has also been recognised for its sustainability strategy, which fosters the responsible use and control of water, the use of electric machinery and vehicles and the elimination of single-use plastics.
The certification process also positively rated the Zoo’s commitment to the public, for instance its school and family workshops on fauna and biodiversity, its backing for initiatives to help promote Catalonia’s cultural and natural heritage and its projects to reintroduce native species.
Barcelona Zoo is the third space operated by BSM to attain the Biosphere Sustainable Lifestyle certificate after Park Güell and the Olympic Ring became the first to gain recognition in 2019. Both of these have had their certificates renewed this year.
The Biosphere Sustainable Lifestyle certificate is awarded by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), an independent body with the goal of promoting actions and programmes for sustainable and responsible tourist development.
