Barcelona Triathlon is back with some changes

The triathlon becomes part of the global Challenge Family brand and will be known as the Challenge Barcelona Triathlon as from the next edition, to be held on 8 October. The goal is to boost the event and make it more international, as part of the annual calendar of over 35 triathlons held under the brand in 27 countries around the world.

This year’s Challenge Barcelona Triathlon includes a major new addition in the form of the Elite Short category, with 25,000 euros in prizes. This category consists of 1,500 metres swimming, 60 km by bike and 16 kilometres on foot. It will be exclusively for professionals and is a scoring round in the World Challenge Bonus.

The event will also be a scoring round in the ranking for the Professional Triathletes Organisation, with the short category also counting towards the classification for the Challenge Family Championship.

The other categories consist of the following distances:

  • Olympic: 1,500 metres swimming, 40 km by bike and 10 km on foot.
  • Sprint: 750 metres swimming (1 lap), 20 km by bike (2 laps) and 5 km on foot (1 lap).
  • Supersprint: 300 metres swimming (1 lap), 7 km by bike (1 lap) and 2.5 km on foot (1 lap).

As with the last edition, participants can take part individually or in pairs. The sprint and olympic distances can also be covered on a relay basis. Youngsters between the ages of 12 and 17 can also take part in the Junior Challenge, with a supersprint distance offering the same services as those for adults.
