Barcelona Medals of Honour 2024 awarded
The Barcelona Medals of Honour for 2024 have been awarded, recognising individuals and organisations for the contribution to the city’s values and for exemplary roles in spheres such as community movements, sport, activism and photography.The following medals were awarded at a city level:
- Fundació Arrels,in recognition for its work to help the homeless, based on volunteering, respect and support.
- Bàrbara Martínez Sánchez, for more than 30 years devoted to promoting the health of the elderly through sport, making her a leading figure in the neighbourhood of Barceloneta.
- Sílvia Reyes (posthumously), for her activism devoted to the recognition, visibility and dignity of the LGBTI collective.
- Comunitat Palestina de Catalunya, for their commitment to the defence of human rights, which has helped to build an open, solidarity and fraternal Barcelona.
- Maria Assumpció Vilà, for her outstanding role in the sphere of social volunteering, linked to the city of Barcelona.
At a district level, the following medals were awarded:
Ciutat Vella
- Fundació Roure, for 30 years working to help elderly people, families and the underprivileged in the neighbourhood of Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera.
- Javier Alegria, for 30 years at the helm of the monthly publication El Raval, which offers a plural perspective on the reality of the neighbourhood, removed from stigmas, and for being a driving force in the community network.
L’Eixample
- Joan Itxaso (posthumously), as a leading figure in the community movement and social struggles of the Sagrada Família neighbourhood.
- Arxiu Històric del Fort Pienc, for over twenty years of work regaining and historical memory of the Fort Pienc neighbourhood.
Sants-Montjuïc
- Lluïsa Erill Abajés, in recognition of her commitment and devotion to building the network of associations in the local area.
- APA Poble-sec, for its promotion of sport and the values associated with it, linked to a social task and role as an association in the neighbourhood and the city.
Les Corts
- Eldibrando Peña Vallido, for his work promoting the community network from his hairdressing saloon for more than forty years.
- Associació de Veïns del Barri de la Mercè, for promoting neighbourliness, cultural and sports activity, the protection of the natural environment, as well as the interests of local people.
Sarrià – Sant Gervasi
- Rosa Castells i Cuch, for her contribution to the commercial fabric of the Sant Gervasi neighbourhood and involvement with local associations.
- Castellers de Sarrià, for 25 years devoted to building community ties in Sarrià – Sant Gervasi through the values of the human towers world.
Gràcia
- Pilar Aymerich, for her outstanding path and contribution to the world of photography and her links with the neighbourhood of Gràcia.
- Associació de Veïns i Amics del Passeig de Sant Joan, for its work to improve public space, in defence of the interests of local people.
Horta-Guinardó
- Manuel Dengrà, for his devotion over fifty years at the helm of the Futbol Club Martinenc and his commitment to grass roots sport.
Nou Barris
- Club Deportivo de Torre Baró, in recognition for its work to favour the integration of people with disabilities through sport.
- Pastisseria Roquetas, for its trajectory of three generations of cakemaking and its contribution to the neighbourhood’s commercial fabric.
Sant Andreu
- Mirada de Dona, for more than twenty years working in community care and support for women.
- Josep Carbonell i Sabaté, in recognition for a lifetime devoted to the community movement in the neighbourhood of La Sagrera, and for his conciliating and consensual character.
Sant Martí
- Joan Mani Sagalà, for his work adding vitality to the neighbourhood through traditional festivities and the commercial network, and for his consistency in the struggle of local people.
- Club de Natació Poblenou, in recognition for its centenarian trajectory promoting sport, physical activity and health.
The Barcelona Medal of Honour is an award introduced in 1997 on the occasion of the centenary of the aggregation of villages on the Barcelona plain, to recognise individuals and organisations for their professional or social work and contribution to the development of citizen awareness in civic values and virtues.
