Let’s break precariousness this 8M
Barcelona City Council is marking Internation Women’s Day this year by encouraging us to look ourselves and each other in the eye and talk about precariousness, to combat the inequalities suffered by women just for being women, with data that show an alarming reality in the city. The city will be getting behind the event with numerous activities all around the municipality and a decentralised programme with stakeholders in each district involved: themed cycles, lectures, workshops, concerts etc.
Barcelona is marking this year’s International Women’s Day under the slogan “It’s time to looked ourselves in the eye and talk about precariousness”, with data on the social and labour precariousness that affects women and reflect an alarming reality in the city.
For instance, women’s average salary is 6,000 euros lower than men’s. Women are more likely to have part-time jobs than men and are mainly the ones who provide care for dependent people, earning more than 500 euros less in average monthly pensions.
The campaign “Let’s break precariousness” centres on public awareness about this persistent and multi-sided problem, which needs firm and urgent attention, and at the same time shows the city’s solid commitment to the feminist struggle to call out the inequalities and discrimination suffered by women for simply being women and to achieve real and effective equality.
Numerous events and activities are being organised in the city’s neighbourhoods for 8M, including activities based around culture and affirmation, with something for everybody: talks, workshops, exhibitions, concerts, debates, meetings, artistic displays and screenings etc. These can all be found on the 8M website, as well as the news items linked to the activities on this page, by district.
