Adoption is best for Christmas!

More than 1,200 cats and dogs have been abandoned in the city this year, ending up at the Barcelona Pet Shelter (CAACB). Over 300 of them will spend the festive season in cages, waiting for somebody to take an interest in them and provide them with care and affection. In a bid to promote pet adoption and the responsible ownership pf cats and dogs, the City Council has teamed up with the Fundació Affinity and other collaborating entities to run the campaign ‘Adoption is best for Christmas’, which this year takes a virtual format due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Barcelona Pet Shelter has taken in 1,271 animals this year, 821 of which have been adopted (443 dogs and 378 cats).

The CAACB is the municipal body with the most responsibility for animal welfare in the city. It provides care for animals, runs the lost animal service to help reunite pets and families and also starts proceedings in the case of abandoned animals.

The CAACB offers citizens a website to introduce animals currently waiting for a home and to promote responsible adoption. You can find information on the process and the necessary procedures here. To visit the centre you need to request an appointment by email to adopcionscaacb@bcn.cat.
