Morir lo hace todo el mundo [Everyone Dies]

José y sus Hermanas

Teatre Lliure Gràcia   26/06 - 07/07

You mean it wouldn’t be better to pretend everything is fine? A young company from Barcelona tells lies out of fear. v

José y sus Hermanas have been busy producing new shows. They made their debut with a production that has been seen countless times, and even the Barcelona Grec Festival has repeatedly shown interest in their creations. The pandemic forced Explore el jardín de los Cárpatos online, but they were at the Grec nonetheless, and last year they were invited to run a workshop with young people, which was a great success. Now they have been invited back. In their previous piece, Concurso de malos talentos, they were brave enough to try and imagine their futures, in the plural: their futures on and off stage, and also their futures together and apart. Were they actually brave or did they just act like it? Did they appear carefree and unconcerned for one short hour to bask in the glory and then weep in secret? They talk a great deal about resilience and tenacity, but this time they want to look the audience in the eye and confess that they are a bunch of cowards. In this fifth piece they will tell you that they are scared to death and full of unanswered questions. In this piece, more than any other, José y sus Hermanas want to pretend, they want to put on a front, they want to make everyone believe that everything is fine because they have no other choice. They will do what they do best: tell a heap of lies. That’s the whole point.

Everyone Dies is the new stage creation by José y sus Hermanas, a company created in 2017 and known for its contemporary, multidisciplinary theatre with critical and social content. They quickly made a name for themselves with Los bancos regalan sandwicheras y chorizos [Banks give out lunchboxes and chorizo](2017), a production that was followed by others such as Arma de construcción masiva [Weapon of mass construction] (2018), the above-mentioned Explore el jardín de los Cárpatos [Explore the Carpathian garden] (Grec 2020; online) and Concurso de malos talentos  [Bad talent contest] (2022).

Co-produced by José y sus Hermanas, Teatre Lliure and  Grec 2024 Festival de Barcelona.

Supported by ICEC, Fabra i Coats: Fàbrica de Creació and Temporada Alta.
