de Federico García Lorca

Yerma, young and married but apparently unable to bear her husband a child, tries to find her identity as a woman in the repressive, claustrophobic atmosphere of rural Andalusia in the 1930s. Lorca caused quite a stir when this tragic poem was first performed in Madrid in 1934. The controversy it aroused mirrored the human and social conflicts that were all soon to explode into the Spanish Civil War. After its controversial Madrid debut, the work was a great success when performed in Barcelona, where it was revealed as one of Lorca’s most beautiful, intense and emotive pieces, a clear, cool gaze at an unfair, extraordinarily complex world. Sixty years later, Yerma returns to Barcelona once more with its discourse by no means dated: a denouncement of intolerance.
