Writings on suicide; testimonies of near-death experiences; fiction; poems; texts by Primo Levi and Fritz Zorn... Taking all this material, Calixto Bieito and Marc Rosich created a modern oratorio that, instead of telling the Passion of Christ, speaks to us of the pain and death of men and women. This reworking of Bach’s St Matthew Passion also features songs by Abba, PJ Harvey, Johnny Cash, Nick Cave and others, comparing and contrasting lighter pop music with classical transcendence. In Voices, seven people relate their end-of-life experiences before a great wall of loudspeakers that turns sound into suffering to become an eighth character. The Grec 2011 presents a show that left audiences dumbstruck when it was first performed in Bergen in 2010.
