Mos Maiorum

Wheat or electricity? Energy or food? These choices may sound strange, but they are very relevant in today's world. We are shown this by a company dedicated to documentary and political theatre. Should we replace the allotment with solar panels?

Come and sing. You will participate in a ritual to summon witnesses who will tell us what is happening in the countryside today. We will see it through the verbatim technique, in which an interpreter precisely reproduces on stage the phrases and dialogues that a real person has said. Through three interpreters and musicians, these witnesses will tell you about the business of installing photovoltaic panels and how these devices intended to produce electricity are eating up large areas used for growing wheat and other essential crops. Is the rural world losing its identity? At what point has food sovereignty been lost? What will the work of those who work there be like once the entire countryside has been transformed into a massive power plant?

Migration, gentrification, gregarious behaviour and other issues that generate social conflict, such as a rushed and unplanned energy transition, are particularly interesting to Mos Maiorum members. It is a theatre collective founded in 2015 with a unique working method: they create theatre pieces based on interviews and sound recordings. Alba Valldaura and Ireneu Tranis, along with regular collaborators Clàudia Vilà (space design) and Guillem Llotje (sound space), are members of the company, which has presented shows such as Mos Maiorum, on the theme of migration, Gentry (Grec 2018) on gentrification (Adrià Gual 2017 award from the Institut del Teatre and Barcelona Provincial Council) and Turba  (2020), on the mechanisms of mass mobilisation, a production resulting from the residency carried out during 2019 at the Teatre Lliure.

A co-production of Mos Maiorum, la Fira Mediterrània (Manresa) and the Festival de Llegendes de Catalunya (Sant Martí de Tous).

With the support of the Government of Catalonia, Barcelona City Council, CCCB, Factoria Sí and Montgat City Council.
