The Grec pays homage to the late-lamented Joan Montanyès, Monti, by staging the show that this artist was working on when he died in 2013. Rhum is a meditation on the art of making people laugh and is inspired by the life of a clown who became famous in the early-20th century.
Enrico Jacinto Sprocani (1904-1953), better known as Rhum, was one of the great clowns in the first half of the 20th century. A friend of the director Jacques Tati, making a film with him in 1935, Rhum was renowned for his extraordinary improvisational talent. His life, however, like that of many clowns, was unhappy, his personality tormented. The life and work of this artiste inspired the show that Joan Montanyès, Monti, clown and founder of the circus company Monti i Cia., was working on when he died in May 2013. His death deprived audiences of this show until now, when it is staged at the Grec thanks to the director and dramaturge Martí Torras, who was working with Monti at the time, and the actor Jordi Martínez. The two teamed up to bring the project to fruition. Rhum is a meditation on the art of clowning that combines tenderness, humanity, poetry and defiant misbehaviour in equal parts. The show, which will later open at the Teatre Lliure, is performed by a cast that ranges from the clown Oriol Boixader, Oriolo, to the musician Pep Pascual, amongst others.
