A rather unconventional creator invites the public to create their own story about Islamic State based on real conversations between young combatants and their families.
This is a production by Roger Bernat, an artist specializing in theatre shows without actors in which the spectator takes centre stage, either becoming part of the show (La consagració de la primavera, Numax-Fagor-plus, seen in the Grec 2014), or, as in this case, becoming a mediator who creates his/her own version of the facts by choosing between a series of texts and conversations. The action dates back to 2012, when some citizens living in Ceuta travelled to Syria to fight for Islamic State. The police tapped the telephones of these individuals and monitored what they published on the social networks. The literal repetition and the mechanical reproduction of these texts and the telephone conversations that they had are, in fact, the raw material of No se registran conversaciones de interés.
Upon entering the theatre each spectator will be given wireless headphones with three channels, each of which will allow him or her to listen to actors reproducing some of the conversations. By channel hopping, everyone will construct their own narrative, and therefore no two members of the audience will have the same experience. Islamic terrorism, but also daily life in the neighbourhoods of Ceuta, or a thousand and one everyday issues are likewise touched upon in a production that tells us about Islamic State, dispensing with journalistic filters. This enables us to analyse not just the background to the organization’s announcements but also the forms of messages that have been generated as if they were products of mass culture.
