Stubbornly, I support the thread of my voice on poetry, that thread which joins the first cries of the child I once was to the last breath that one day will cloud the mirror. I sing for the word; the music then follows... I ask living poets for poems expressly for my voice, and I seek in books the words of those no longer here with us. That is my work, my life and my joy. Fado, perhaps the most powerful cultural tool that I inherited from my father’s country, enables the word to be renewed in oftrepeated traditional melodies. The word is the world we are; it is one of my homelands, a homeland without borders.
