Unesco recently catalogued the song or chant of Sybil as Human Intangible Heritage. To celebrate this, Maria del Mar Bonet – who first recorded the piece in 1979 – will perform the traditional work, one of Majorca’s most beloved masterpieces of religious folklore, at the festival. The chant is sung at Palma Cathedral and nearly all the churches on the island on Christmas Eve every year, and is also popular in Valencia and Catalonia as the oldest known religious drama. So it is that this medieval chant, recently presented in Ecuador, at Quito Sacred Music Festival, brings Majorca’s finest voice back to the Grec.
