What happens in the forest at night? Who killed Laura’s cat? This story takes us to a mountain village where a forest ranger has just arrived to investigate mysterious animal deaths and murky disappearances.

Judit, a forest ranger recently stationed in a high mountain village, receives a strange call from a local man, Ton. His daughter Laura’s cat has gone missing. The pet was a gift from her stepbrother Alex for her last birthday, and her father, strangely affected by the loss, asks the ranger to help find it. She gets involved in the search for the lost animal, and little by little discovers the weight of superstition and the unpardonable deeds that lie beneath the ordinary veneer of the inhabitants of a town that is much easier to get into than it is to get out of.
