Born in Oaxaca, trapped between two cultures -North American and Mexican- Lila Downs has been gifted with a special talent when it comes to both conserving and renewing her country’s musical traditions. Following her latest Grammy win, her role in the film Frida and her performance with Caetano Veloso at last year’s Oscars, Downs is enjoying a particularly sweet moment. Now she is back on the road with her latest CD, La Cantina, a record in which, thanks to her voice, her guitar, and some intensely dramatic songs, she transports the audience to a Mexican bar where life is both celebrated and lamented, where you both laugh and cry.
