On Sant Jordi (St George’s Day), to mark the 200th anniversary of the South American wars of independence, Grec Festival de Barcelona and Casa Amèrica Catalunya organise a continuous reading of Gabriel García Márquez’s novel El general en su laberinto (The General in His Labyrinth). Throughout the day, nearly eighty Barcelonans, including both well-known personalities and anonymous citizens, will read from a text that is devoted to the final months in the life of Simón Bolívar, the father of American emancipation. In his novel, the Nobel-prize winner recreates an outstanding historic character and revisits his military successes, his loves and, also, his mistakes.
The writers Màrius Serra and Jordi Coca, the journalists Pitu Abril and Xavier Graset, the actors Pepa López, Ángel Pavlovsky, Pepe Sacristán and Héctor Alterio and the artists Pep Bou and Frederic Amat are amongst those taking part in this event.
