The Catalan National Art Museum reverberated to the beat of the Calanda drums in 2020, when choreographer Marcos Morau and his company premièred a show dedicated to the surrealist filmmaker Luis Buñuel. It was called Sonoma, a made-up word from the Greek and Latin roots of ‘sound’ and ‘body’. The show went back to the basics, to the body and flesh, to create a work suspended between dream and fiction, alluding both to rural Calanda and cosmopolitan Paris, settings from the surrealist director’s life. Now Sonoma (inspired by the piece Morau himself created for the Ballet de Lorraine, Le Surréalisme au service de la révolution, which was later performed at the Palais des Papes at the Festival d’Avinyó) returns to the festival, but in an open-air venue, the Teatre Grec, and in an expanded version with more performers on stage, more drums beating in unison, and the special participation of singer Maria Arnal and all the dancers who have performed in the show over the years.
It is the culmination of a long-standing friendship between the Barcelona Grec Festival and La Veronal, whose development we have been following since they presented Vorònia as their inaugural show in 2015. With a dazzling international résumé that has made them one of the most sought-after contemporary dance companies in Europe today, we have also seen them perform Pasionaria (2018), Opening Night (2022) and Firmamento (2023) at the Grec.
