Our partner, the family, friends, society, ... Our relationships with others can be described by circles. Or that, at least, is how the director and choreographer Rami Be'er sees things, along with his company, an icon in the world of Israeli contemporary dance.
Yehudit Arnon is the name of a dancer born in the former Czechoslovakia who, during World War II, survived the Nazi death camps despite refusing to dance for her captors. Years after the war, she settled at the Ga'aton kibbutz in Galilee, where she established a dance centre and was one of the founders of the International Dance Village, where around one hundred dancers of different nationalities live and work. The Village is also home to the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company, directed by the choreographer Rami Be’er. The personality of Be'er, who worked with Yehudit Arnon as a child, permeates the entire company, which only performs his works, including this one, entitled If At All. The piece is a celebration of life in common that, as the director and choreographer himself explains, always takes the form of circles, from the most intimate to the widest socially. That is why circularity marks the dancers’ performances, the structure of the choreography and the composition itself. An eclectic soundtrack envelopes the show, which features costumes, set design, lighting and choreography over which Rami Be'er exercises close control to ensure that they all speak with one voice. Solos, duets, trios and group performances create dynamic images on stage, their hypnotic effect inviting the spectator to construct the show from their own perspective. Because the meaning of the choreography is not predetermined; rather, it is open to the sensitivity, memories and experiences of each spectator, who can freely decide what the show they are watching suggests to them.
