The Basque musician ends his residency at Fabra i Coats by revisiting his repertoire accompanied by a big band made up of 18 women and two men, all of them students, former pupils or collaborators of the Taller de Músics.
The musician and songwriter Fermín Muguruza, who was the leader of the band Kortatu in the 1980s and of Negu Gorriak in the 90s, has over the last year maintained especially close links with Barcelona. After writing the graphic novel Black is beltza, protesting against censorship and discrimination, he took the experience one step further by turning a story set in New York in the period of racial discrimination into an exhibition harking back to the most combative moments of the 1960s. He took it to Arts Santa Mònica, where the musician set up a creative lab with the Barcelona artist Chalart58, visited by many local artists (from Joan Garriga to Madjid Fahem, Manu Chao’s guitarist) with whom he produced a disc released by a Barcelona label. That cross-media experience will be continued with the making of an animated film, but in the meantime Muguruza has had another artistic residency in the city, this time at Fabra i Coats, whose director suggested the idea of establishing networks between the Creative Factory and the people of Sant Andreu to him. Taking advantage of the fact that one of the headquarters of the Taller de Músics is in the area, Muguruza has put together a big band named after a socialist and feminist cooperativist in Barcelona in the early 20th century, and which, in fact, features 18 women and two men. The versatile jazz musician and well-known trumpeter David Pastor is the band’s conductor.
