One of the most outstanding singers on the contemporary flamenco scene presents a new show in which she fuses the musical traditions of her native land with more modern interpretations of the genre.
She is the daughter of cantaor Enrique Morente and bailaora Aurora Carbonell, so it comes as no surprise that flamenco should be central to the life of Estrella Morente. Even so, few could have foreseen that she would make her debut at sixteen before going on to become one of the most interesting artists in contemporary flamenco. Today, at the age of thirty-five, Estrella has taken her art around the world, and is a leading figure, not only in the world of flamenco, but on the Spanish music scene in general. Her voice, clear as cut glass, enchants and delights even as she expresses the most intense, dramatic emotions. This year, Estrella Morente brings a new show to the Grec Festival, once more demonstrating her gift for blending the most classical Granada flamenco sounds with more innovative approaches to the genre. For, whilst not straying far from orthodoxy, Morente’s cante style is an example of how to bring tradition up to date whilst enriching it with a unique, personal touch. In short, the return of an artist who made her festival debut in 1997 (Poble Espanyol) and has since graced the Teatre Grec stage twice, in 2001 and 2010.
