El veneno del teatro

Rodolf Sirera / Mario Gas

Mario Gas directs Daniel Freire and Miguel Ángel Solá, a leading name in Argentinian stage and film, in a dialectic piece on the themes of life and the theatre. An outstanding example of 20th-century Valencian theatrical works.

In his first theatre project since his spell as director of the Teatro Español, Mario Gas brings Miguel Ángel Solá to the Barcelona stage. Solá is an Argentinian with Catalan blood who performed in Por el placer de volver a verla at the Teatre Borràs in 2010, but rarely appears in our city.  To see this actor, who has received countless awards in his home country, is a real treat, even more so if it is in a theatrical duel written by the Valencian playwright Rodolf Sirera with all the precision of a chess game. In 18th-century Paris, an aristocrat invites a renowned actor to perform in a play he has written, and for which he seeks realism taken to the limit. However, the text is about Socrates, the philosopher who ended his life by drinking a cup of hemlock. And the problem is that the actor’s performance of this defining moment does not seem to satisfy my lord’s aesthetic ambitions… An intimate production that speaks to us about power, submission and the frontier between life and play-acting.
