The flamenco cantaor presents an intimate evening, performing his greatest hits from a glittering career, accompanied on piano by Jaime Calabuch, Yumitus, a Catalan Gypsy born in the Gràcia neighbourhood of Barcelona.
It is no coincidence that El Cigala will be accompanied only on piano in this show at the Teatre Grec, because the instrument marked a turning point in his career. He discovered the piano in 2000 thanks to the great Bebo Valdés, with whom he recorded one of the essential albums in his career: Lágrimas negras. Meeting the legendary Cuban pianist was a real gift, because Valdés revealed to the singer the great potential of a musical instrument that has always accompanied him ever since. After Bebo, Diego enlisted the musician’s piano-playing son, Chucho Valdés, and then Caramelo de Cuba. Since 2005, however, he has been accompanied by Jaime Calabuch, Yumitus, a Barcelona Gypsy. And, in this concert, Yumitus will perform El Cigala’s greatest hits with him, playing styles from zambra to tango and bolero. In short, an intimate, highly personal show richly infused with all the emotion that piano and voice can transmit.
