«At 40, half-way through my “vital path”, my intuition tells me what it was that motivated Shakespeare to write this play: how easy it is for man to harm others. And how, by harming others, he himself opens the door to self- destruction. But the old Shakespeare, humanist and wise, makes us to look at life in a learning way and tells us that –if we strive to develop our conscience– we may regenerate ourselves.» Ferran Madico
Polixen, king of Bohemia, visits the court of his friend Leont, king of Sicily. At Leont's request, his wife convinces Polixen to extend his stay at court but, paradoxically, the contact between the queen and his friend causes Leont to have an attack of jealousy: Polixen has to flee, his wife is imprisoned and she gives birth to a girl whose paternity is in doubt. The oracles say that the queen is faithful and that Leont is the child's father...but jealousy has blinded the Sicilian king. The girl will be abandoned and adopted by a shepherd; when she grows up, fate will want her to fall in love with Polixen's son. The original paternal opposition will be overcome and this will lead to a happy ending. Both will marry and their parents will reconcile: love will have triumphed.
