His government plunged an entire country into crisis, but now that he has left office, the former president wants to address his people to tell them everything he would not, could not or did not dare tell them during his mandate.
The financial crisis, the disconnection between the political classes and the people, the economic sequestering of indebted countries, corruption, old and new politics, privatisation, the influx of foreign capital... we have become familiar with these concepts, which now form part of our lives. Our protagonist speaks of all this with complete freedom, with the peace of mind that no longer having to measure his words gives. And with acid irony. Don’t ask which former president we are talking about, because it could be any one of many. In these times that we have had the misfortune to live in, they come out of the very woodwork. “Confessions of a Former President” was created as a result of the PIIGS Festival, an event devoted to new European drama on the theme of the economic crisis. The play was the subject of a dramatised reading two years ago and now makes its debut on the Catalan stage. The author is a young Italian writer, one who trained as a playwright in our city and is considered a rising star throughout Europe. The Sala Beckett presented his play Variacions sobre el model de Kraepelin (o El camp semàntic dels conills a la cassola) in 2012.
