A Colombian choreographer who was due to present one of this year’s Grec Festival shows gives the inaugural speech for the ‘la Caixa’ Art for Change programme Exchange Forum talks, a space for discussion aimed at bringing together the community of people interested in art as an element of social transformation.
The Colombian choreographer and dancer Rafael Palacios, who also directs the Colombian dance company Sankofa, was due to come to Barcelona this summer to embark on a creative process with young people at the CaixaForum in the framework of the ‘la Caixa’ Art for Change programme. In addition, Palacios and the Sankofa dancers were also planning to perform their show La ciudad de los otros at the Grec Festival de Barcelona. The Covid-19 pandemic has made it necessary to cancel both these events, but we will at least have the chance to listen to a conversation between Palacios and Francesc Casadesús, the director of the Grec Festival de Barcelona. We will thus meet the director of a company that has carried out educational projects, established intercultural bridges between Africa and America and created a large repertoire of choreographies that have been performed not just in Colombia but also in many other countries worldwide. Sankofa creates discourse, weaves the community together and promotes social transformation through dance. What is Sankofa’s discourse, and what spaces for reflection do its projects give rise to?
