From the underground scene in Santiago to playing at major concert halls and festivals in America and Europe. This is the rise and rise of a dance band keen to inform those who still don't know it that they also play cumbia in Chile.
The most joyful and festive essence of Latin American sounds today. A musical cocktail served up by Chico Trujillo, a band formed in 1999 following the break-up of punk and ska outfit La Floripondio. Several former members went on to found Chico Trujillo, playing bolero, traditional Latin American music and, of course, cumbia. The secret of their success is in their revival of musical genres from the past, particularly cumbia as it was before the Pinochet dictatorship, but fused with contemporary “alt” sounds. The result is a repertoire based on new Chilean cumbia, an exciting show packed with dance rhythms that assures nights of pure pleasure and channels a sound whose popularity is spreading all over America. A night of dancing and partying down, as Plaça de Margarida Xirgu closes the Grec Festival just as it began: with dance music served up by a band devoted one hundred per cent to popular music.
Sharing the bill with Chico Trujillo is a Catalan pop-folk group, Sense Sal. This band is formed by young members who have already demonstrated their musical maturity at such venues as the Jazz Cava in Terrassa and festivals like Embassa't (Sabadell) and L'Acústica (Figueres).
