The absurdity of existence, nihilism and the logic of power are some of the themes touched on by this production, a staging of one of the great plays by the Algerian-born French playwright and novelist.
Suetonius, a Roman writer and one of the masters of the biography genre in the ancient world, left for posterity a portrayal of the third Roman emperor, Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, better known today by his childhood nickname: Caligula. The writer Albert Camus, one of the essential authors of 20th-century France, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957, based himself on this account in order to create a play that is actually several works combined in one. The protagonist faces up to the absurdity of existence (one of the key themes in the work of Camus) after the death of his lover and sister, Drusilla, and in an attempt to show the mortality and unhappiness of human beings, subjects his people to all manner of horrors and persecutions.
Pablo Derqui plays the title role. The actor has worked with Mario Gas before, in the production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman seen at the Teatre Lliure in 2009, and the following year he was at the Grec appearing in Neil LaBute’s Things We Said Today. Gas, besides being a theatre director associated with the Barcelona Grec Festival since the first edition, is an actor and a film and opera director. He has directed more than 100 productions, for which he has won all kinds of awards, including a Butaca award, the National Theatre Award, several Max awards and a City of Barcelona Prize for the Performing Arts.
