Her sensual voice, performing a wide range of rhythms, has been acclaimed on stages the world around. Some say that Concha Buika does not interpret flamenco, jazz, blues or soul, but is a genre in herself.
Born in Majorca, the daughter of Guinean exiles, she grew up in a gypsy neighbourhood of the capital, Palma. Her matchless mastery of the most varied musical genres cannot be due only to the places and environments she has seen. However, these personal circumstances may have something to do with the natural grace with which she pays tribute to Chavela Vargas and works with such different musicians as the fadista Mariza, the Majorcan country singer Tomeu Penya, the Cuban jazz pianist Chucho Valdés and such living legends as Chick Corea. Few performers have dared to take on such a varied range of rhythms as Buika, but she does it with a conviction that has made her one of the most revered voices on the Latin scene today. For years, her passionate voice with its halting rasp has been a well-kept secret in her home country. However, thanks to her appearance in Pedro Almodóvar’s 2011 film The Skin I Live In, this outstanding singer finally became known to discerning ears around the world.
