Agrupación Señor Serrano

Object theatre, video, sound, performance technique ... All these resources are used by an innovative company in a new show that talks to us about movement in its broadest sense: from migration to the galaxies.

Two mirages. On the one hand, war, drought, mass deforestation, polluted coastlines, exploitation of labour, political instability, appalling health conditions, persecution, ethnic cleansing, forced deportation, overuse of natural resources, depleted aquifers, food shortages... On the other, well-stocked supermarkets, security in the street, family stability, good health services, freedoms, paid work, respect for human rights, reasonable standards of living, recycling and renewable energy, prosperity, social mobility… And, between the two mirages, flocks of birds. Thousands of birds in constant migration, tracing impossible shapes in the sky. Movement. Ceaseless movement. Birds and, beyond them, planets, asteroids, raw materials, galaxies, blood, cells, weapons, atoms, electrons, advertising, quarks, ideology, fear, waste, hope. Life. Nothing in the cosmos is still. Stillness does not exist, it is a chimera. The only thing that there is is movement. If it is impossible to stop an electron, what sense does it make to place fences around flocks of birds?

Birdie is the latest creation from Agrupación Señor Serrano, a Barcelona-based company that has achieved considerable international renown, winning the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2015. This is a troupe that creates original shows based on stories that emerge from the contemporary world, using resources both classical and innovative to stretch the limits of their theatre, employing disciplines that range from performance to text, video, sound and models.
