Despite having been deprived of fire, the leading character in this production, perhaps a modern-day Prometheus, is able to emit light signals in order to return to people what the political and economic gods deny them.
In April 2012, in the middle of the financial meltdown in Greece, a pensioner, Dimitris Christoulas, decided to shoot himself in the head before the Greek Parliament. He left a chilling suicide note in which he refused to survive by “fishing amongst garbage bins”. This story, which reflects the tension suffered by the European middle and working classes, inspired the director Antonio Simón Rodriguez and the playwright José Sanchis Sinisterra. Now, Sinisterra has written the first work in a new project launched by the Grec Festival of Barcelona in which, every year, an author will pen a play about a contemporary theme based on the formal principles of Greek theatre.
In this piece, a cast of actors and actresses and a chorus formed by fourteen young graduates from the Theatre Institute will present the story of Bartomeu, who attempts to return to humankind the treasure that the World Bank, a modern incarnation of the Olympian Gods, denies them: their dignity. How will this modern-day Prometheus be punished? Will Bartomeu’s light signals transmitted reach their destination? Will we be capable of distinguishing them amidst the present confusion? All will be revealed in a contemporary tragicomedy with a strong political and social component.
Audio description and personal assistance will be provided at the performances at the Teatre Grec on July 19.
Programmes in Braille and accessible print will also be available for people with visual impairment at this performance.
