Since their origins in 1987, the Balanescu Quartet have earned renown and acclaim from contemporary musicians around the world, working with Michael Nyman, David Byrne and the Pet Shop Boys, amongst others. Led by the Rumanian virtuoso violinist and composer Alexander Balanescu, the ensemble has blazed a trail through musical territories, penetrating the most avant-garde regions. At Grec 09, the Balanescu Quartet will present a work based on songs performed in the 1950s by the Romanian singer Maria Tanase (1913-1963). This unique new musical spectacular, which features both film images of the singer and samples of her voice, bears the unmistakable hallmark of the Balanescu touch.
