Joan Maria Gual

1984 - 1985

In 1984 and 1985 , and for the first and only time in its history so far, the Grec Festival had two co-directors, Joan Maria Gual and Josep Anton Codina.

Gual, born in Granollers in 1946, studied Law at university where, in 1965he joined the Teatro Español Universitario (Spanish University Theatre, TEU),working as an actor, assistant director and manager. Shortly after graduating,he started to study acting and directing at the Adrià Gual Drama School. He later began teaching at the school in 1970,combining this work with the post of assistant director at the Teatro Nacional de Barcelona under director Ricard Salvat.

In 1973, Gual organised,directed and programmed the First Adrià Gual Centenary Independent Theatre Season at the Capella de l'Antic Hospital de la Santa Creu. Not long after, he founded his own theatre company, Grup A 71, presenting stage adaptations of works by Manuel de Pedrolo,as well as productions based on the plays of Molière and others. In 1979, he was appointed as a member of the provisional Catalan government's theatre advisory council. In 1980, he helped to set up the Teatre Regina, where he was appointed artistic director and manager in 1981. That same year saw him begin working for Barcelona City Council's Culture Department.

In 1984, having been appointed as director of Barcelona City Council Theatre, Cinema and Cultural Promotion Services, he took over joint responsibility for organising the Grec Festival with Josep Anton Codina.

This experience was followed, in 1985, by Gual's appointment as director of the Mercat de les Flors theatre, a post he held until 1988. In 1992, he accepted an invitation to become Barcelona City Council Culture Department's Advisor for the Performing Arts.In 1995, he once more took over as director of the Mercat de les Flors, whilst continuing to direct his own theatre initiatives, whilst in 2002 he was appointed as director of the Theatre City Consortium.

Finally, Gual held the post of artistic director of the Peralada Festival from 2006 to 2010, returning to the Grec that same year to direct a production of Eugene Ionesco's The Lesson.
