ISEKAI: HISTÒRIA D’UN SEGREST [ISEKAI: STORY OF A KIDNAPPING]
Isekais, in Japanese fantastic fiction, are a sub-genre in which the protagonists must travel to, and adapt to, parallel worlds. Drawing on this concept and on creator Loredana Volpe’s personal experience of returning to her native Venezuela after having survived an attempted kidnapping there, this powerful and original play, performed to great acclaim at the Tantarantana (where it won the 2023 Barcelona Crea grant), engages with fantasy, reality, role-playing and video games to ask viewers what could happen if someone returned to their country of origin and was forced to re-encounter childhood friends without being able to escape the attempted kidnapping this time. Steeped in references to the genre, from the magical samurai warrior protagonist played by Loredana Volpe to the Amulet of Time that could be the vanishing point for the whole story, this play, free and open to all, is an opportunity to enjoy live the first full-length performance at the 42 Festival since the experimental closing in 2022 and various partial stagings in other editions. The show is 90 minutes long and will be followed by a discussion that will connect the two plays on the day’s lineup.
