These gardens, part of what was once the estate of Dr Josep Castelló i Galvany, are noted for their elegance and the variety of species they contain.
Biodiversity
The vegetation here is important for the variety of its species and the quantity, age and size of its specimens. Prominent are the enormous Canary Island date palms, large yuccas, horse chestnuts and false pepper. There are also notable examples of date palms and, outstanding for their rarity, some succulent plants originating from California. As for shrubs, the huge cheesewoods and oleander stand out, along with the sweet bays surrounding the gardens and the laurustinus.
Art and Architecture
These gardens were created for the Castelló family house, a building with a country-house structure that was built in the 1930s. A big manor with a very rural design: a gable roof, large windows and balconies on the main facade, and arched windows in the side facade. It is one of the few that are still preserved in Sant Gervasi and is presently a centre for elderly people, the Casal de Can Castelló.
Landscaping and Design
The gardens are elegant and romantic. They are dominated by dense, rounded, very well-defined yet irregularly shaped flowerbeds of great landscape beauty. There are also lots of trees and palms, most of which are very large and very old, as they were planted at the start of the last century.
While the benches along the paths ensure visitors have a place to rest and chat, the wall that encloses the gardens ensures peace and quiet.
A number of features merit your attention for their charm, for example, the small channels dug either side of the paths that are covered with river rocks, which mark them out and allow rain water to pass through without eroding the paths.
