This is an excursion through a wood inside the city, where the local authority has improved the network of paths, created resting areas and also children’s play areas, the largest of which is equipped with table-tennis tables. Another notable feature is the picnic areas, especially the one in the highest part of the park. The tables are shaded by a large carob tree and the location offers an exceptional panoramic view of Barcelona, from Sant Adrià de Besòs to Prat de Llobregat. The park lies next to the Can Caralleu public swimming pools, which are ideal for taking a dip during the summer.
History
Parc del Castell de l’Oreneta is on land formerly occupied by two estates: the Can Bonavia farm, belonging to Count Milà’s family, and the Castell de l’Oreneta farm, owned by the Tous family, who had the castle built that lends the park its name.
For many years the land was owned by the Red Cross, who intended to build a hospital there, but the project never got off the ground. So the space remained closed and isolated from the city until its acquisition by Barcelona City Council, which opened it to the public in 1978.
Biodiversity
The park has preserved almost all its original Mediterranean vegetation, with species that are very typical of Barcelona’s mountain range. In fact, that vegetation is its main attraction and makes it an amazing space to find in the city.
You will see Aleppo pines and stone pines, along with oak trees and holm oaks, surrounded by an understorey packed with shrubs, such as broom, boxwood, laurustinus, strawberry tree and mastic tree. There are some hundred-year-old specimens of the latter two species, as well as numerous aromatic plants, such as thyme, sweet bay and lavender. Its orange trees, medlars, almond trees, olive trees and pomegranate trees bear testimony to the agricultural past of a good part of this place.
New species planted in the park over the years, including eucalyptuses, cypresses, cedars and hackberry trees, contribute towards the luxuriance that characterises it.
Two trees stand out for their exceptional beauty and are now listed in the Barcelona Trees of Local Interest Catalogue: an enormous eucalyptus, with the city beneath it, at one of the bends along the path named after this species of tree, and a St Lucie cherry tree, close to the pony stables.
Art and Architecture
A castle was built in the upper reaches of today’s park in 1910 but destroyed during the Spanish Civil War and only a tower, a staircase and a few walls now remain.
The wood also has an ornamental fountain dating back to 1863, an old threshing yard, a garden pond and a half-buried irrigation system that recalls the agricultural past of this area.
