People of Barcelona

Josep Palau i Fabre is today one of a number of eminent figures inextricably linked to the history of Barcelona. This book sets out to explore all the aspects of this relationship with the city. It begins in the Eixample district in the times of the satirical magazine, Papitu and his father’s youth; it reconstructs literature and theatre in Barcelona during the Republic; it offers an account of the early years of Franco, and shows an eagerness to escape from it through love, literature and politics. The book ends in the decades of the seventies and eighties when Palau was able to feel fulfilled as a writer and scholar on Picasso.
