CSIC'S Bioscience hub
In December 2022 the president of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Eloisa del Pino, and the Minister of Territorial Policy, Isabel Rodríguez Garcia, signed an agreement to cede to the CSIC the site that currently houses the State's Mobile Park, located in front of the Ciutadella campus of the UPF, in order to build a service centre that will house the different research units that the CSIC has in Catalonia and that carry out work in the field of biosciences.
Barcelona City Council, for its part, will make the necessary modifications to the current urban planning rules to make the new building possible with the uses and characteristics foreseen.
The new building will serve the different CSIC research units and institutes, incorporating the necessary technical facilities (animal facility, laboratories, crystallography platform, confocal microscopy service, etc.).
This initiative could bring more than 300 researchers and around 40 research groups in the field of biosciences to the area around the La Ciutadella Knowledge Hub.
In this way, La Ciutadella Knowledge Hub will become one of the scientific centres of reference in the field of biosciences in Catalonia and Spain, as well as in southern Europe, taking into account the future installation of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in an area where there are already other research institutes such as the Centre for Gene Regulation, the Municipal Institute of Medical Research, the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park, the Mediterranean Centre for Marine and Environmental Sciences and the Institute of Evolutionary Biology.
