Built expressly for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, the INEFC site played host to the freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling competitions. It was later refurbished to house the University of Barcelona’s higher education centre for physical activity and sports sciences. Boasting over 30,000 square metres of floor space, it has places for 1,000 students and its own training fields.

Innovative architecture

This imposing neoclassical building, designed by Ricard Bofill, is the first building in Spain to have been built with architectural concrete, involving the use of some 1,700 prefabricated and previously plank-moulded pieces.

Space for sport

The building’s interior is organised round two large central courtyards. These are separated by a central nave with room for 400 people. The four wings are distributed around the courtyards and are consist of clearly differentiated spaces, such as the blocks of classrooms, the library and the competition areas. The outdoor games areas, which can be accessed from the classroom blocks, include one pitch with natural grass, another with artificial grass and two with a synthetic surface.
