More cognitive-stimulation activities at old people’s homes

07/08/2021 - 11:54 h

Elderly people. The aim is to counter the effects of the pandemic and to improve the health and well-being it residents.

The last few months have seen four municipal old people’s homes start a cultural and psycho-motor activities programme aimed at combating the isolation and cognitive deterioration of their residents caused by the Covid-19 crisis.

Music-therapy sessions, social gatherings, cycling excursions and horticultural and dance classes have shown that cognitive, emotional and functional stimulation is key to improving the well-being and health of elderly people.

Thanks to the work carried out by teams from the Municipal Institute of Socia Services and to collaboration from facilities and organisations such as the Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona, the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, the Museu Picasso, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, the Singular Música & Alzheimer project and the Pasqual Maragall Foundation, the initiative’s positive results will ensure the programme extends over the coming months to close to three hundred of the city’s old people’s homes and that it is established as a new intervention model for improving the physical and mental health of elderly people.
