En la temàtica de la pintura Sumi-E es busca reflectir la natura en totes les seves manifestacions possibles. Es caracteritza per estar allunyada de tot lluïment, i el traç directe i precís li confereixen una frescor lliure i espontània. Plasmar l'essència de l'objecte més que la seva aparença formal; la simplicitat; l'instant i el buit. Des de la composició i els principis estètics del paisatge zen, ens apropem al coneixement i domini dels estris: la tinta, el pinzell japonès i finalment, l’alliberament de la pinzellada.
